§2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools

A. A school choosing to add an elective course to its program of studies shall apply to the director of the Division of §2105. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for Student Standards and Assessments, State Department of Education (SDE), at least 30 days prior to the anticipated date of implementation.

B. The application for an elective course shall be signed by the school principal §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for and superintendent, if applicable, and shall contain the following information:

1. detailed outline of course content;

2. time requirements (minutes per day; days per year or semester);

3. detailed course objectives and how they shall be §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for measured;

4. qualifications of the instructor;

5. when the course is to begin;

6. approximate number of students;

7. criteria for enrollment.

C. If the course is to be offered for the succeeding school year, an end §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for-of-the-year evaluation shall be sent, along with the second and third year applications, to the Division of Student Standards and Assessments, for determining its continuation.

D. After an §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for elective course has been in effect for three successive school years and the school wants the course to be a permanent part of its curriculum, the school principal and/or superintendent, if §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for applicable, shall apply by letter to the Director of the Division of Student Standards and Assessments, Department of Education for permission to include it.

§2107. Unit of Credit

§2109. High School Graduation Requirements

For incoming freshmen prior to 2009-2010, students shall complete a minimum of 23 Carnegie units of credit in an individual program which shall be cooperatively planned by the student, the student's parents, and the school to §2105. B. For incoming freshmen prior to 2009-2010, the 23 units required for graduation shall include 15 required units and 8 elective units. For incoming freshmen in 2009-2010 and beyond, the §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for 24 units required for graduation shall include 16 required units and 8 elective units for the Louisiana Core Curriculum, or 21 required units and 3 elective units for the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum.

C. Minimum Requirements (effective §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for for incoming freshmen 1999-2000 to 2008-2009)

1. English―4 units, shall be English I, II, and III, and English IV or Business English.

2. Mathematics―3 units.

a. Effective for incoming freshmen 2005-2006 and beyond, all students must:

(a). algebra I (1 unit); or

(b). algebra I-pt. 1 and algebra I-pt. 2 (2 units); or

(c). integrated mathematics I (1 unit);

ii. the remaining unit(s) shall come from the following:

(a §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for). integrated mathematics II;

(b). integrated mathematics III;

(c). geometry;

(d). algebra II;

(e). financial mathematics;

(f). advanced mathematics-pre-calculus;

(g). advanced mathematics-functions and statistics;

(h). pre-calculus;

(i). calculus;

(k). discrete mathematics.

3. Science―3 units, shall be the following:

a. 1 unit of biology;

b. 1 unit from the following physical science cluster: physical science, integrated science, chemistry I, physics I §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for, physics of technology I;

c. 1 unit from the following courses: aerospace science, biology II, chemistry II, earth science, environmental science, physics II, physics of technology II, agriscience II, an additional §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for course from the physical science cluster, or a locally initiated science elective;

d. students may not take both integrated science and physical science;

e. agriscience I is a prerequisite for agriscience II §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for and is an elective course.

4. Social Studies―3 units, shall be American history; one-half unit of civics, one-half unit of free enterprise or one full unit of civics or AP American §2105. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for government; and one of the following: world history, world geography, western civilization, or AP European history.

5. Health and Physical Education―2 units, shall be health and physical education I and health and physical education §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for II, or adapted physical education for eligible special education students.

NOTE: The substitution of JROTC is permissible.
A maximum of four units may be used toward graduation.

6. Electives (including a maximum §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for of four credits in religion)―8 units.

7. Total―23 units.

D.1. After the student has attended high school for a minimum of two years, as determined by the school, the student, the student's parent, guardian §2105. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for, or custodian may request that the student be exempt from completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum.

2. The following conditions shall be satisfied for consideration of the exemption of a student from §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum.

a. The student, the student's parent, guardian, or custodian and the school counselor (or other staff member who assists students in course selection) shall meet to discuss the §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for student's progress and determine what is in the student's best interest for the continuation of his educational pursuit and future educational plan.

b. During the meeting, the student's parent §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for, guardian, or custodian shall determine whether the student will achieve greater educational benefits by continuing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum or completing the Louisiana Core Curriculum.

c. The student's parent §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for, guardian, or custodian shall sign and file with the school a written statement asserting their consent to the student graduating without completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum and acknowledging that one consequence of not completing the §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum may be ineligibility to enroll in into a Louisiana four-year public college or university. The statement will then be approved upon the signature of the principal §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for or the principal's designee.

3. The student in the Louisiana Core Curriculum may return to the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum, in consultation with the student's parent, guardian, or custodian and the school counselor (or §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for other staff member who assists students in course selection).

4. After a student who is 18 years of age or older has attended high school for two years, as determined by the school, the §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for student may request to be exempt from completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum by satisfying the conditions cited in Subparagraph 2.c with the exception of the requirement for the participation of §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for the parent, guardian, or custodian, given that the parent/guardian has been notified.

E. For incoming freshmen in 2009-2010 and beyond who are completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum, the minimum course requirements shall be the §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for following.

1. English—4 units, shall be English I, II, III, and IV.

2. Mathematics—4 units, shall be:

a. algebra I (1 unit) or algebra I-Pt. 2;

b. geometry;

c. algebra II;

Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for. the remaining unit shall come from the following: financial mathematics, math essentials, advanced mathematics-pre-calculus, advanced mathematics-functions and statistics, pre-calculus, calculus, probability and statistics, discrete mathematics, or a locally-initiated elective §2105. 3. Science—4 units, shall be:

a. biology;

b. chemistry;

c. two units from the following courses: physical science, integrated science, physics I, physics of technology I, aerospace §2105. i. Students may not take both integrated science and physical science.

ii. Agriscience I is a prerequisite for agriscience II and is an elective course.

a. 1 unit of civics or AP American government, or 1/2 unit of civics or AP American Government and 1/2 unit of free enterprise;

b. 1 unit of American history;

8. Electives—3 units.

9. Total—24 units.

F. For incoming freshmen in 2009-2010 and beyond who are completing the Louisiana Basic Core Curriculum, the minimum course requirements §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for for graduation shall be the following.

1. English—4 units, shall be English I, II, III, and IV or senior applications in English.

2. Mathematics—4 units, shall be:

a. algebra I (1 unit) or algebra I-pt §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for. 1 and algebra I-pt. 2 (2 units);

b. geometry;

c. the remaining units shall come from the following: algebra II, financial mathematics, math essentials, advanced mathematics-pre-calculus, advanced mathematics-functions §2105. i. Students may §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for not take both Integrated Science and Physical Science.

ii. Agriscience I is a prerequisite for agriscience II and is an elective course.

4. Social Studies—3 units, shall be:

§2111. Assessment Requirements for a State Diploma

A. Any §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for approved nonpublic school may award a school diploma to any student who meets the state minimum high school graduation requirements.

B.1. Any approved nonpublic school that participates in the state Exit Testing §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for Program shall award a state and/or school diploma to a student who successfully completes the state's minimum graduation requirements and meets the assessment requirements below.

a. Students entering the ninth §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for grade prior to 2010-2011 must pass the English Language Arts and Mathematics components, and either the Science or Social Studies component of the Graduation Exit Examination.

b. For incoming freshmen in 2010-2011 and beyond §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for, students must pass three End-of-Course Tests in the following categories:

i. English II or English III;

ii. Algebra I or Geometry;

iii. Biology or American History.

2. A student who attends a §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for school that opts to participate in the state Exit Testing Program but who does not successfully complete the state's minimum graduation requirements and meet the assessment requirements shall not §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for be eligible for either a state or a school diploma.

C.1. Any state-approved nonpublic school that wishes to award the state diploma to its students shall contact the state department for time lines §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for and other administrative guidelines for administering the State Exit Testing Program.

2. Any nonpublic school that opts to participate in the state Exit Testing Program shall follow rules and regulations §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for set by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

D. Any approved nonpublic school that does not choose to participate in the state Exit Testing Program may grant a school diploma, which §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for shall carry the same privileges as one issued by a state-approved public school.

E. The awarding of high school diplomas shall in no way effect the school approval classifications of any school §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for.

§2113. State Diplomas

A. A nonpublic high school choosing to issue a state diploma shall meet state requirements.

§2115. Special Requirements

A. Each school shall follow established §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for procedures for special requirements for high school graduation that will allow each school to address individual differences of all students.

§2117. High School Credit for Elementary Students

A.1. An elementary student §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for shall be eligible to receive high school credit in a course listed in the programs of study in mathematics, science, English, social studies, or foreign language; or keyboarding/keyboarding applications, or §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for computer/technology literacy provided that:

a. the time requirement for the awarding of a Carnegie unit is met;

b. the student has mastered the set standards of the course taken §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for; and

c. the teacher is qualified at the secondary level in the course taught; or the student has passed the credit examination in the subject taken, mastering the set standards for the course:

i §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for. the credit examination shall be submitted each year for approval to the Division of Student Standards and Assessments or the Division of Family, Career and Technical Education of the DOE;

ii. school principals §2105. Adding Electives to the Program of Studies for Middle Schools - Part LXXIX. Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for may request the state Algebra I credit examination by notifying the Division of Student Standards and Assessments.

The course title, year taken, P/F (pass or fail) or the letter grade and unit of credit shall be entered on the Certificate of High school Credits §2105. High School Credit (H.S.C.) must be indicated in the remarks column.

§2119. Proficiency Examination for High School Students

§2120. Credit Recovery

A. Credit recovery refers to instructional programs for students who have failed courses taken previously.

1. Students earning Carnegie credit in a credit recovery course must have previously taken and failed the course.

§2121. Advanced Placement Program

§2123. Service Credit

A. Two units of elective credit toward high school graduation shall be awarded to any member of the United State Armed Forces, their reserve components §2105. A. A school choosing to add an elective course to its program of studies shall apply to the Director of the Division of Student Standards and Assessment §2105. 4. qualifications of the instructor;

5. when the course is to begin;

Bulletin 741 (Nonpublic)―Louisiana Handbook for has been in effect for three successive school years and if the school/system wants the course to be a permanent part of its curriculum, the school principal through the local §2105.
