Description: This course is designed to develop further students’ ability to understand spoken and written French and to express coherent ideas and arguments orally and in 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus writing. Emphasis is placed on appropriate use of syntactic structures in the production of texts, as well as grammatical accuracy. Students will learn about the world of work in France, and 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus more precisely employment and working conditions through various tasks and business-related texts.

Building on the work undertaken at Level 1, these classes enable students to produce increasingly accurate and sophisticated 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus written French (including commercial letters), and to analyse increasingly complex texts in French.

Oral components:

The oral classes will reinforce work done in the written course, which they will complement through emphasis on 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus vocabulary acquisition and its use in appropriate contexts, preparation for the year abroad, and work on less formal syntax and register. Independent learning also plays a vital role in these areas.

Description: This course unit aims to develop your ability to read and understand Old and Middle French, and to translate those languages into English with appropriate 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus fluency and sensitivity. It introduces you to the key features and techniques of medieval literature, and develops your skills in analysing texts composed in the original languages. This approach will also benefit your 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus modern French studies in two ways. First, studying earlier forms of French will enhance your ability to analyse and discuss a range of features essential to the evolution of the language. Second, reading 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus medieval literature will not only improve your skills in textual analysis, but will also afford you a better understanding of the context from which modern French writing has emerged.

Semester 1 is primarily 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus linguistic in its фокус. Your work will be centred on translation, supported by linguistic analysis, of extracts from a selection of Old and Middle French texts. This practical work will be informed 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus by ongoing study of a range of features of central importance to comprehension of early French language. The texts will introduce you to a variety of material, including tales of King Arthur 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus’s court, comic narratives, scathing satires, and love poetry. They will also will expose you to a broad range of different types of early French, varying in tone, register, age, and 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus dialect. Translation and analysis of the extracts will also serve to familiarise you with terminology appropriate to description of the language, and to introduce you to some fundamental aspects of translation strategy.

Semester 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus 2 is primarily literary in its фокус, and has a project-based approach. You will work in small groups, selecting a passage from a ‘menu’ of prescribed Old and Middle 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus French texts, and working together throughout the semester to produce a detailed literary commentary on it and write a review of a relevant secondary text. Items on the ‘menu’ include the Chanson de Roland 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus, a memorably intense epic of military conquest from the early 12th century; Alain Chartier’s Quadrilogue invective, a state-of-the-nation debate that addresses the parlous state of France in the early 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus 1420s; the political theatre and poetry of Pierre Gringore, which vividly comments on the Italian wars of the early 16th century; and other texts of diverse types and dates. Your work 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus will be supported by fortnightly classes, comprising a mixture of ‘plenary sessions’ devoted to commentary skills, and ’supervision sessions’ in which groups of students meet with one of the course tutors 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus. Regular written reports will be required from groups.

Description: Since the Lumière brothers’ L’Arrivée du train en gare de La Ciotat (The Arrival of a 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus Train at La Ciotat) in 1895, France has become home to one of the world’s most developed cinema industries. Film now represents one of the most significant modes of national 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus cultural expression and cinema in France is often associated with notions of quality and innovation. This course takes a historical look at some of the key French films and moments from the 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus 1930s to 1980. Semester one will consist of a series of lectures and seminars based on the films listed below amongst others and this will include an analysis of two of the cinematic 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus movements which have become emblematic of French cinematic specificity and originality: le réalisme poétique (poetic realism) and la nouvelle vague (the new wave). The work of some of France’s most 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus important auteurs will be examined through case studies of some of their most famous and influential films.

Description: This course will introduce students to some of the central problem areas and theories of modern linguistics, with a фокус on language as a means of communication 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus, and on the connections between language, human cognition, and the construction of social relationships.

Specific topics to be covered are: Structuralism, Sociolinguistics, Politeness theory and Intercultural Communication, Pragmatics, Text linguistics, Functional/cognitive linguistics 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus.

The course favours breadth over depth, and does not presuppose any knowledge of linguistics. It does, however, presuppose a basic familiarity with French grammar and phonetics. It will serve as preparation 2 Plus: A further 20 credits of Level 2 Course Units offered by French Studies 3 Plus for future, more advanced study of the structure and functions of language, including its role in social interaction.
